In the US, it was established in 2006 as a division of Universal Music Group Distribution, Corp. (later rebranded as UMG Commercial Services Inc.)
In 2015, UMD was dissolved to help UMG provide more creative ethics to their labels. However, up until early 2020, it managed to operate as an in-name only copyright holder, before being renamed "UMG Commercial Services".
The name "Universal Music Distribution" may also appear on releases outside of the US.
