• Greenmantle was formed in September 1971, initially as a three piece with Ian Campbell, Billy Campbell & Jack Law. They brought together their background in rock music, blues and folk to create a distinctive blend. Whilst Ian left in 1972, due to ill health, Billy and Jack carried on as a two piece carving out a reputation as singer/songwriters across Britain. In 1973 they signed a management deal with Johnnie Morris, who secured a recording contract with Philips records. By 1974 they released a single, a Rupert Holmes song called ‘Terminal’. However, Billy and Jack felt the production didn't represent their sound. After recruiting two additional members, Allan Stevenson on drums, and Peter McBrearty on guitar, they felt more satisfied with the new sound. The new line prompted other changes as they moved away from folk clubs and concert halls into the rock-pub and club circuit. Allan was replaced by John Houston in 1975 on drums, and the band carried on writing, recording and playing. A year later, Jack decided to leave, having become disillusioned with the music business, and was replaced by Mick Tausney. Greenmantle continued for a further six months before breaking up.
